South Africa Waives Medical Report Requirement for Visa and Permanent Residence Applications

The Minister of Home Affairs has issued Ministerial Immigration Directive No. 10 of 2026, introducing a welcome change for applicants applying for South African visas and permanent residence.

With immediate effect, applicants are no longer required to submit a Medical Report as part of their visa or permanent residence application.

The directive grants a blanket waiver of the Medical Report requirement in terms of section 31(2)(c) of the Immigration Act, 2002, removing the obligation contained in:

  • Regulation 9(1)(c) (temporary residence visas); and
  • Regulation 23(1)(f) (permanent residence permits).

Who Does This Apply To?

The directive applies to:

  • All new temporary residence visa applications;
  • All new permanent residence applications; and
  • Applications that are currently pending adjudication.

What Has Been Waived?

Only the Medical Report has been waived.

Applicants must still comply with all other documentary requirements applicable to their particular visa or permanent residence category.

When Did It Take Effect?

The directive came into operation on the date it was signed by the Minister and applies immediately.

Our View

This is a positive administrative change that reduces the paperwork required for immigration applications. While applicants will still need to satisfy all the legal requirements for their visa or permanent residence category, one standard document has now been removed from the application process.

Applicants should continue to ensure that all remaining supporting documents are complete and accurate before submitting an application.
