South Africa Electronic Travel Authorisation ETA

South Africa’s Electronic Travel Authorisation, commonly known as the ETA, is a digital system that allows eligible travellers to apply online for authorisation to travel to South Africa without following the traditional visitor visa application process.

The South African ETA is already operational and forms an important part of the Department of Home Affairs’ wider programme to digitise immigration and visa services.

A significant change took effect in August 2026: South Africa introduced an official R500 electronic processing fee for ETA applications.

The system is being expanded progressively, which means travellers should establish whether the ETA is available for their passport, purpose of travel and intended port of entry before starting an application.

What is the South Africa ETA?

The Electronic Travel Authorisation is a digital travel authorisation linked to the traveller’s passport.

The Department of Home Affairs describes it as a digital authorisation that allows prospective travellers from eligible visa-required countries to travel to South Africa for tourism or visitor purposes without obtaining a traditional visitor visa.

The official system also allows visa-exempt travellers to apply voluntarily for an ETA to facilitate processing at the border.

The application takes place online and involves capturing the passport, answering questions about the applicant and proposed trip, taking a live facial image for biometric purposes, paying the applicable fee and submitting the application electronically.

How much does the South Africa ETA cost?

The official electronic processing fee for a South African ETA is R500.

The new fee was introduced in August 2026 through amendments to South Africa’s immigration fee regulations. It is specifically described as an electronic processing fee applicable to the ETA.

This is an important distinction because the R500 is the government’s electronic processing fee. It should not be confused with professional fees that a private immigration or visa practice may charge if a traveller chooses to obtain assistance with an application.

Travellers should also establish whether any separate government visa fee applies to their particular circumstances.

Who can currently apply for a South Africa ETA?

The ETA began with a limited rollout involving travellers from:

China

India

Indonesia

Mexico

Home Affairs has confirmed that these four countries formed the initial tourist rollout and that the system is intended to expand to additional countries.

Because the rollout is continuing, eligibility should always be checked against the live Department of Home Affairs ETA system at the time of application.

The current official registration requirements also state that an applicant must:

Be at least 18 years old.

Hold a valid ordinary passport that will not expire within 19 months.

Enter South Africa through an ETA-enabled port of entry.

Be able to take a selfie and scan the ordinary passport using a smart device.

Can Indian passport holders apply for a South Africa ETA?

Yes.

Indian citizens formed part of the initial South African ETA rollout together with citizens of China, Indonesia and Mexico.

For eligible Indian travellers, this represents a substantial change from the traditional visitor visa process.

Instead of automatically assuming that a traditional visitor visa application is required, an Indian passport holder planning a short visit to South Africa should first establish whether the ETA is available for the proposed journey and whether the applicant satisfies the current requirements.

The government ETA electronic processing fee is currently R500.

Which South African airports accept ETA travellers?

The official ETA portal currently identifies the following airports for ETA applicants:

OR Tambo International Airport

Cape Town International Airport

Lanseria International Airport

King Shaka International Airport

Travellers should select and use an ETA-enabled port of entry. The official registration system warns that entering through a non-enabled port may affect the traveller’s ability to use the ETA for admission.

This is another reason to check the live system before travelling, as the ETA infrastructure is being progressively expanded.

How does the South Africa ETA application work?

The Department of Home Affairs describes the application as a digital process.

The applicant:

  1. Photographs or scans the passport that will be used to travel to South Africa.
  2. Answers questions about themselves and the proposed trip.
  3. Takes a live photograph for biometric verification.
  4. Pays the applicable application fee.
  5. Submits the application electronically for an outcome.

The system therefore represents a substantial departure from the traditional visa process involving physical documentation and, in many cases, interaction with an embassy, South African mission or visa application centre.

How long does a South Africa ETA take?

The Department of Home Affairs describes the ETA as an automated digital system designed to produce substantially faster outcomes than the traditional visa process.

The official ETA portal currently tells applicants to submit the application and wait for an “instant outcome”.

Travellers should nevertheless avoid leaving an application until immediately before departure. Technical issues, eligibility questions or individual circumstances may still require attention before travel.

Can you travel to South Africa more than once on an ETA?

The Department of Home Affairs states that an ETA is linked to the traveller’s passport and allows eligible holders to travel multiple times during the validity of the ETA.

However, the ETA is not intended to facilitate repeated extended stays in South Africa.

It also does not authorise the holder to work in South Africa.

Travellers should therefore make sure that the ETA is appropriate for the actual purpose of their visit.

What is the difference between the ETA, eVisa and a traditional South African visa?

South Africa is moving from older paper and physical visa processes towards digital immigration services.

The traditional process generally requires visa-required travellers to apply through the appropriate South African mission or other designated application mechanism.

South Africa subsequently introduced electronic visa processing as an earlier step towards digitisation.

The ETA represents a broader change to the underlying immigration processing model, incorporating online applications, biometric identity verification and automated processing.

For travellers, the important question is therefore not simply:

“Can I apply online?”

It is:

“Which application route currently applies to my passport, purpose of travel and intended port of entry?”

Is the ETA replacing South African visas?

Not completely, at least not yet.

The ETA is being expanded progressively.

Home Affairs has stated that its longer-term objective is much broader than the initial tourist rollout. Its plans envisage progressively expanding electronic immigration processing beyond the initial tourist implementation and into additional visa categories.

Travellers should therefore not assume that every South African visa has already migrated to the ETA.

What are the advantages of the South Africa ETA?

The ETA is intended to make legitimate travel to South Africa faster and easier while strengthening immigration control.

Potential advantages include:

Online applications.

Digital passport capture.

Biometric identity verification.

Electronic payment.

Faster processing.

Less reliance on paper documentation.

Reduced need for physical interaction with visa application centres or South African missions.

The government also regards the system as part of a wider strategy to support tourism, business and investment while modernising border security.
